About

MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena has a specialized trained and certified stoma care nurse (Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse or "WOCN") who can help with smooth transitions after surgery and troubleshoot pouching issues due to leakage, treat skin irritations or wounds directly around parastomal region/skin, provide family/caregiver education, and hernia/prolapse belt fittings.

What is a Stoma Care Nurse or WOCN?

A WOCN is a senior registered nurse who has taken special courses to care for people with ostomies. They provide medical care for patients when necessary and are an excellent source of advice, guidance, and support during a difficult transition period. They help patients deal with every aspect of having a stoma, from hygiene to how to deal with questions about their stoma.

Please contact the WOCN if you are experiencing issues with your ostomy.
