Melanie Smalley, Bailey Scholarship Recipient

Melanie Smalley - Gladwin, MI

"I thank the Baileys for their generous donation that made this scholarship program possible."

Realizing She Can Make a Positive Contribution

Seeing the positive impact that many health care providers have made in her Gladwin community, and realizing that she could also make a positive contribution in a similar way, is one of the reasons why Melanie Smalley chose to become a physician.

A scholarship from The Bernard F. and Melissa Anne Bailey Family Fund is helping her pursue that path. Smalley is currently attending Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

“I have an interest in endocrinology at this point in my schooling,” said Smalley. “There are a large number of diabetic patients and patients with other hormone-related issues that I would love to help. I am also a big advocate for healthy eating and exercising, and I think this attitude and commitment in my own life could help me motivate patients with diseases that can be better managed by making lifestyle changes.”

Smalley emphasized how much receiving the Bailey scholarship has meant to her and how she looks forward to helping others.

“One of the biggest deterrents from attending medical school is the large amount of debt accrued, and this scholarship is helping to minimize that amount,” said Smalley. “I thank the Baileys for their generous donation that made this scholarship program possible, and for all those who will benefit directly and indirectly from their commitment to health care.”

The Bernard F. and Melissa Anne Bailey Family Fund is an endowment fund given to MidMichigan Health to administer as a student scholarship program for those area individuals interested in pursuing professional schooling in a health-related profession.
