Biography

Thomas J. Veverka, M.D., specializes in trauma care at MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland and brings more than 20 years of surgical experience. He offers expertise in the evaluation and management of trauma patients, as well as a broad range of general surgical diagnoses. Dr. Veverka believes strongly in improving patient care and joined the Medical Center to build a Level II trauma service and team. He is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care, and has experience leading two other hospitals through the American College of Surgeons (ACS) trauma center verification process.

Dr. Veverka received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, Minn. He completed a fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and a general surgery residency at Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals.

Philosophy of Care

“As a Level II Trauma Center, the Medical Center provides residents throughout the region with access to local trauma care and ensures that critically injured patients have immediate access to trauma treatment,” said Dr. Veverka. “During the first hour after injury, referred to as the ‘golden hour,’ there is the highest likelihood that prompt medical attention will prevent death. Now that we’ve reached this milestone, it’s important to continue our hard work to ensure that we are providing exceptional care to each and every patient we treat.”

“Our trauma team includes trauma surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, emergency physicians, anesthesiologists, radiologists, intensivists and trauma trained nurses throughout the Medical Center,” he added. “We treat patients with multiple critical injuries such as rib fractures, collapsed lungs, internal organ injuries to the spleen, liver, kidneys, diaphragm, and bowel; fractured bones, back and spine fractures; trauma to spinal cord and head; and severe wounds and lacerations.”

Special Interests and Procedures

Dr. Veverka specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis and management of complex surgical and medical problems in acute trauma patients. He also specializes in a variety of surgical procedures including pancreaticobiliary, gastrointestinal surgery, herniorrhaphy, basic and advanced laparoscopy, and abdominal wall reconstruction.

Dr. Veverka and his wife, Cathleen, have five children. Together they enjoy traveling and Dr. Veverka enjoys playing hockey, bicycling, golf, reading, and gardening.
