Sarah VanSumeren, P.A.-C., is a bone health specialist and a member of the comprehensive musculoskeletal care team at MidMichigan Health. This team includes orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists, podiatrists, neurosurgeons, as well as physical, occupational and speech therapists. As a bone health specialist, Sarah works closely with patients at risk for secondary fractures caused by weakening of the bone. Her role includes:
- Screening and diagnosis of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone disorders to prevent secondary fractures.
- Evaluation for secondary causes of bone loss, such as thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disorders.
- Coordination of bone density scans and fall risk assessments.
- Counseling on calcium and vitamin D intake.
- Coordination of weight bearing and strengthening exercises through physical therapy.
- Medication therapy management.
- Ongoing treatment monitoring and follow up.
According to Sarah, the most satisfying aspect of her work is building trusting relationships between herself and her patients in which she can provide guidance to help her patients feel better and live healthy and active lives.
Philosophy of Care
“My philosophy of care is to educate and guide patients so they can make informed decisions regarding their health,” she said. “The relationship I strive to create with my patients is one based on trust and communication. I feel it is important to listen to my patients and respect their story.”
Special Interests and Procedures
Sarah feels that her years of experience in patient care will provide a great foundation for collaborating with patients coming to the Bone Health Clinic. She believes that patient’s lives can positively impacted by simply educating them and providing them tools to prevent further pain and damage to their skeletal system. “I am excited to be able to work with patients to improve their overall bone health,” she said. “I look forward to meeting new patients and collaborating with my fellow providers to help keep our community strong and healthy.”

Sarah is married to Ken VanSumeren who is also a physician assistant with MidMichigan Health. Outside of work, their two children and a chocolate lab keep them very busy and active. Sarah enjoys spending time outdoors, especially camping, hiking and vacationing. She also enjoys reading and sewing.
