"Every patient interaction is an opportunity for me to impact someone’s life and for my patients to have an impact on me."
Brandy Michaels, M.D. is a gynecologic oncologist on the medical staffs of the University of Michigan Health System and MidMichigan Medical Center - Midland. She cares for women with known or suspected gynecologic cancers and sees patients on the campus of MidMichigan Medical Center - Midland at the Center for Women’s Health.
Philosophy of Care
“My philosophy of care is to encounter each new patient with an open mind, ready to learn what they have to teach me,” said Dr. Michaels. “I will take the medical knowledge and expertise that I have and integrate what I learn from my patient as we evolve through the journey together. “
“I want to create an environment of mutual respect. I think that every patient interaction is an opportunity for me to impact someone’s life and for my patients to have an impact on me.”
One thing that drew her to the specialty of gynecologic cancer was the unique opportunity to follow a patient through diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, and into survivorship. This is the only oncology specialty that provides all aspects of this care.
“The most satisfying aspect of my work is when I get to share the news with a patient that they are now ‘cancer free.’”
The partnership between University of Michigan Health System and MidMichigan Health benefits patients by bringing highly specialized, state of the art care close to home. This cuts down on travel during what already can be a stressful time in their lives.
“By working at an academic medical center, I am able to provide high quality care while integrating new medical developments in the field. For example, we have many promising targeted therapies that are still evolving that will help us to individualize treatment plans.”
“I also believe in working cooperatively with alternative medicine to provide quality of life and compassionate care while providing excellent medical care. I want to take care of the patient as a whole, not just the disease.”
During her free time, Dr. Michaels enjoys being outdoors as much as possible. Some of her favorite pastimes include hiking, cycling and working in her garden.
