Biography

Theodore A. Kung, M.D., specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery and serves on the medical staff at the University of Michigan, as well as MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland. Dr. Kung, along with his colleague Adeyiza Momoh, M.D., offer a monthly Breast Reconstruction Clinic in Midland. In addition to offering convenient patient appointments at the Center for Women’s Health, this team performs reconstructive breast surgery at the Medical Center.

Dr. Kung currently serves as a clinical associate professor of surgery in the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan. He completed an integrated plastic surgery residency at the University of Michigan. In addition, he also pursued fellowship training at the University of Washington in Seattle to specialize in microsurgical reconstruction, breast reconstruction and lymphedema surgery.

“Plastic surgery is a unique specialty because its practice is based on a respect for surgical principles, such as restoration of form and function, optimization of aesthetics and attentive assessment of each patient’s individual needs,” said Dr. Kung. “I enjoy plastic surgery because it allows me to offer creative solutions to surgical problems and to greatly improve a patient’s quality of life.”

According to Dr. Kung, he feels microsurgery has revolutionized the field of breast reconstruction. “For many patients, reconstruction after mastectomy is best performed with their own tissues,” he said. “Microsurgical techniques allow us to provide results that are often superior to what is possible with implants.”

I work closely with my patients, giving them as much time as they need to feel comfortable with their surgery and to fully understand the goals, risks, and outcomes of their operation.

Philosophy of Care

“Every patient deserves an individualized surgical approach,” said Dr. Kung, “It is my duty to listen carefully to each patient’s wishes and then provide a tailored professional opinion based on my experience and expertise as a plastic surgeon.” He feels one of the most rewarding aspects of being a plastic surgeon is the ability to develop long standing relationships with his patients while serving to help them restore wholeness or enhance their natural beauty.
