Rani Hanna, M.D., M.S. is an internal medicine physician, specializing in caring for adults. He sees patients 18 and older at MidMichigan Health Park – Harrison.

Philosophy of Care

During medical school, Dr. Hanna developed an interest in internal medicine. He was attracted to the field because of the breadth of disorders presented to an internist, from the complex and rare to the everyday cold. He states, “The quest to find the right diagnosis is a novel experience every day I come into work. My final reward comes when my patients get healthier and feel better.”

“Being a primary care physician is what I’ve always wanted to do, to get to know my patients better and on a personal level, and to form long term relationships. I also enjoy being able to coordinate treatment plans with different specialists, to work together as a team in providing patient care.”

A primary care physician manages acute illnesses as well as chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and COPD. “We also practice preventive medicine,” Dr. Hanna adds, “which involves promoting healthier habits such as exercise, eating healthfully, managing weight and quitting smoking.” Dr. Hanna believes firmly in the importance of good communication between health care practitioners and their patients in order to ensure that the physician understands the goals and concerns of each patient and can make appropriate recommendations. Each patient must understand the risks and benefits of the available treatment options, feel comfortable with the plan of care, and feel free to ask any questions about his or her health. “If a patient doesn’t understand why a particular prescription regimen is necessary, or why I’ve recommended follow up with a specialist, how can that person be expected to comply? A lack of compliance can lead to complications for the individual being treated and must be minimized.”

Medicine is continuously changing, and it is necessary to keep up with the current medical literature and latest innovations. “Evidence-based medicine is the keystone of my practice. The process of learning never stops for a physician.” Dr. Hanna also stresses that physicians should treat patients holistically, not focusing merely on their acute physical symptoms.

Dr. Hanna grew up in a small town nestled in the mountainous coast of Syria, marked by olive trees and pines. “I spent my summers working on my family’s farm, growing vegetables to sell and for us to eat. In the fall, my family and I would harvest olives. We also had a donkey to help transport the harvest, and chickens for eggs and meat. When you grow up in a small town, you know everyone by name, whether they’re young or old. I believe that the Harrison area will feel like my home town in short time.”

Regarding his hobbies, Dr. Hanna is a voracious reader. He also enjoys exercise, watching foreign films, socializing with friends and family, and exploring the great outdoors.
