Paul Cederna, M.D., specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery and serves on the medical staff at the University of Michigan, as well as MidMichigan Medical Center - Midland. Dr. Cederna, along with his colleagues Adeyiza Momoh, M.D., and Edwin Wilkins, M.D., offer a monthly Breast Reconstruction Clinic in Midland. In addition to offering convenient patient appointments at the Center for Women’s Health, this team performs breast reconstructive surgery at the Medical Center.
Dr. Cederna is the Robert Oneal Professor of Plastic Surgery, chief of the section of Plastic Surgery, and professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. By combining his clinical training in general surgery, microsurgery and plastic surgery with his background in biomedical engineering, he has been able to incorporate creative solutions with technically challenging operations to solve the most difficult problems resulting from cancer, trauma, or burns.
According to Dr. Cederna, he originally became interested in medicine when he was a junior in high school and had met his father’s friend who was an orthopedic surgeon. “I got to see him interacting with athletes and thought that it would be fantastic to be a doctor and be able to help them,” he said. “I went into medical school and actually thought I was going to be an orthopedic surgeon as an undergraduate. I continued along that path until I hit my orthopedic surgery rotation which was followed by a plastic surgery rotation. While I enjoyed orthopedic surgery, I found that I loved plastic and reconstructive surgery even more.”
Philosophy of Care
“The best thing about working with patients is seeing them happy with the outcome of their procedure,” said Dr. Cederna. “When I hear about a patient enjoying a family vacation or returning to an activity they love, then I know the operation was a success. I know that we were able to get them back to where they were before surgery, and that’s by far the most rewarding part.”
Special Interests and Procedures
As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Cederna specializes in breast reconstruction, burn reconstruction, minimally invasive plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, peripheral nerve surgery and general reconstruction. He has a particular interest in finding new, innovative and minimally invasive approaches to treating clinically difficult problems. In addition, he enjoys utilizing his microsurgical training in solving complex wound problems requiring free tissue transfer. Dr. Cederna has a very active research enterprise directing the Neuromuscular Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan. He also has a broad background in muscle and nerve physiology, with specific training and expertise in these research areas.
