Michael E. Burkley, D.O., is a board certified family medicine physician. He practiced in the Grayling area for more than 15 years before moving to his current location in West Branch. Dr. Burkley sees patients of all ages, from newborns to senior citizens.
Dr. Burkley chose a career in medicine because it offered the chance to blend his interest in the life sciences with his interest in working with people. “I love practicing medicine,” he said. “I particularly like family medicine because of the variety of patients and problems. I also appreciate the preventive aspect; I can get involved early to help patients arrive at better outcomes.”
He works diligently to help patients successfully manage chronic conditions, and has had particular success helping people who have diabetes. “There are many new and better ways to manage diabetes,” Dr. Burkley said. “I’ve always had good outcomes by helping patients comply with treatment plans. When they obtain and maintain control, they can often prevent serious complications.”
Philosophy of Care
Dr. Burkley said trust and communication form the strongest foundation for an effective relationship. “I hope patients will partner with me and comply with my recommendations as much as they can,” he said. “If they can’t comply, or don’t understand the plan, I want them to tell me so we can work together and come up with a different strategy.”
He said patients should never have reservations about opening up with him. “A patient might come in for blood pressure treatment but in the back of their mind, they’re worried about a funny feeling in their chest,” he said. “I am always open to talking about anything that concerns them. We can always schedule time to work through it.”
“The best part of my job is seeing good outcomes, seeing people who have pain issues that are addressed, and seeing people with blood pressure or diabetes issues that are brought under control,”Dr. Burkley said. “It’s great when patients are able to follow a plan, live healthy and be happy.”
Dr. Burkley is known to be a patient, empathetic listener. “While I will counsel patients about their lifestyle choices, I don’t judge,” he said. “I’m not here to judge, I’m here to help. I want patients to know they can trust me, and be assured that I am doing all I can to look out for their good health.”
Dr. Burkley and his wife, Jackie, a medical assistant, were both raised in Northern Michigan and love living and working in the area. Dr. Burkley, who learned to fly-fish shortly after he learned to walk, fishes year-round, bird hunts with his extended family, and enjoys both downhill and cross country skiing. They live in Grayling with three canine companions.
