Abdul Barakat, M.D., M.B.A., is a board-certified and fellowship-trained pain management specialist with MidMichigan Health’s Spine and Pain Program.
As a pain management physician, Dr. Barakat provides balanced pain management care to diagnose and treat conditions such as neck and back pain, including work-related injuries and sciatica; persistent pain after back or neck surgery; arthritis pain in spine and joints; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS); nerve damage; muscle spasm pain; shingles pain and headaches.
Dr. Barakat decided to go into medicine because he wanted to help people live healthier, happier lives. He was originally interested in cardiology, though he found that anesthesiology and pain management were his true calling. “Unfortunately, nowadays, too many people suffer from chronic pain,” Dr. Barakat said. “If left untreated, pain can affect people’s daily lives, their moods, their productivity, and their overall wellbeing. Because of this, I have chosen to be at the forefront of treatment, treating pain as quickly and conveniently as I can so that people may return to their normal lives and participate in their favorite activities.”
Philosophy of Care
“I like to make sure that my patients are comfortable when they come to see me,” he said. “I encourage them to be open with me, allowing them the opportunity to engage in their own narrative medicine and understanding their own health in order for them to personally make better, more informed decisions regarding their health.”
Dr. Barakat believes in providing a balanced approach to pain treatment that focuses on restoring patients to the functions of their daily lives. This includes creating tailored care plans to address their individual needs.
In his free time, he and his wife enjoy spending time with their four children. They especially like hiking and exploring the beautiful mountains around New Hampshire, and sharing great home cooked meals together.
