Dave Foor, Wound Treatment Center Patient

Dave Foor - Coleman, MI

"I just can't say enough about how well they treated me. I'm so glad I chose Midland for treatment. Those people are amazing!"

Wounds Heal Fast with the Help of Amazing People

Dave Foor was only 47 when he was diagnosed with cancer of the stomach and esophagus.

"I went to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Chicago," he said. "They had to remove a third of my stomach and a third of my esophagus. The initial incision was about eight inches long. After I finished the chemo and radiation, the surgical wounds had not healed."

The cancer specialists in Chicago suggested Foor consider a specialized wound treatment facility and provided the names of several clinics in mid-Michigan. "I chose Midland because it was the closest to Coleman, where we live," he said. "Thank goodness I said Midland. They have great people."

Foor said his treatment at the facility in Chicago was so outstanding, he never expected that any other organization could match it. Instead, he was pleasantly surprised.

"At the Wound Treatment Center, they were just as attentive and every bit as good. You don't see a lot of places like this where they are so caring."

At his first visit to the Wound Treatment Center, Foor knew he made the right choice. "It was all one-on-one from the moment I walked in the door," he said. "From the receptionist to the nurses to the doctors, every single person knows your name, your situation and they know exactly what is going on with your body. It is completely personalized."

In Foor's case, his personalized care plan included hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a specialized treatment for certain problematic, non-healing wounds. During the treatments, the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen inside a pressurized chamber; this quickly increases the concentration of oxygen in the bloodstream where it is delivered to the wound site for faster healing.

Foor said the staff did an excellent job of explaining how hyperbaric treatments work. They walked him through getting in and out of the chamber and answered all his questions. He also had a specialized dressing – a vacuum – that required monitoring at every visit.

"It works by constantly drawing blood to the wound to aid healing," he said. "They would check to make sure it was working well."

Despite being armed with lots of information, Foor said the first treatment was still a surprise.

"It was different. People with claustrophobic issues might have a problem with it at first, but because the tube is clear, it didn't bother me too much."

Any discomfort he experienced was quickly forgotten in light of how well and how quickly the treatments worked.

"Forcing oxygen to the wound site certainly helped – I could easily tell a difference day to day," Foor said. "Before the treatments, my wife and I had to pack the wound every day and it didn't help. With the hyperbaric treatments, I could actually see how quickly it was healing."

Foor had a total of 40 sessions in the hyperbaric chamber, beginning in November of 2016 and finishing near the end of January. He usually went five days a week.

"They have the process down to a science. From the time you get there to the time you leave, they don't waste a minute. Everyone has a role and they are very good at what they do. They have every single step down pat so it's not time-consuming."

Foor said that while the specialized, sophisticated equipment was vital to his recovery, the people made the real difference.

"I just can't say enough about how well they treated me. I'm so glad I chose Midland for treatment. Those people are amazing!"
