R.E.A.C.T. Workshop

Injuries, urgencies and emergencies occur all too commonly in a variety of sports venues and settings. Members of the sports medicine “team” are often called upon to respond to these situations and provide the initial care for the athlete until emergency personnel arrive to provide more definitive care. Although “team” members may have some knowledge of potentially urgent situations they rarely have the opportunity to practice applying their knowledge and skills in a “real time” setting. The R.E.A.C.T. Workshop is designed to provide participants with an overview of significant sports related health events and an opportunity to practice the skills needed to appropriately and effectively implement initial management strategies. In addition, the Workshop allows an opportunity for all members of the sports medicine “team” in a particular community to learn to work together in their various roles, in order to assure the most optimum outcome for the athlete. Overall this workshop will help communities develop and implement effective strategies to respond to urgent and emergent athletic situations.

Optional CPR Course (8 - 8:45 p.m.)

R.E.A.C.T. Workshop participants will have the option to complete the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Heartsaver® CPR/AED Course. This course is designed to prepare participants to provide CPR and use an AED in a safe, timely and effective manner. The skills learned through the on-line and hands-on training will help participants recognize a cardiac arrest, call for emergency help quickly, and provide hands-only CPR until medical personnel arrive. The AHA’s online portion of the course is available at Simply click on the “See Courses” button and look for the “Heartsaver CPR/AED Course.” AHA’s cost of the online course is $15 and includes a completion certificate. IMPORTANT: You will need to bring your certificate to the R.E.A.C.T. Workshop to complete the hands-on portion of the training. The hands-on skills practice and testing will be provided free of charge immediately following the workshop. Upon successful completion of both the online and hands-on portions of the course, participants will receive a Heartsaver CPR AED course completion card, valid for two years.
