Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy is one of the bariatric surgery procedures available at MidMichigan Medical Center - Gratiot in Alma, Michigan and MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland, Michigan.

This procedure uses staples to divide the stomach into two sections. The largest section, which accounts Laparoscoic Sleeve Gastrectomyfor approximately 85-90 percent of the stomach, is permanently removed. The remaining portion of the stomach is long and narrow, resembling the shape of a sleeve.

A sleeve gastrectomy procedure maintains the basic function of the stomach; however, the volume the stomach can handle is significantly less. Patients who undergo sleeve gastrectomy feel full quickly and therefore, consume less food at each meal. On average, patients lose about half of their excess body weight in 12 months.

This procedure is performed laparoscopically (through a small incision with a lighted scope and tiny tools) on individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 50 or greater.

 Advantages of Sleeve Gastrectomy

  • Reduces stomach capacity but allows the stomach to function normally. This enables patients to digest most food types.
  • Eliminates the portion of the stomach producing hormones that stimulate hunger.
  • Minimizes the chances of an ulcer occurring.
  • Very effective procedure for patients with a high body mass index.
  • Appealing option for people who have existing anemia, Crohn's disease and other conditions that make them too high risk for intestinal bypass procedures.

Disadvantages of Sleeve Gastrectomy

  • Considered investigational by some insurance companies and may not be reimbursed.
  • The procedure is not reversible.
  • Leaks and other complications associated with stapling may occur.
  • This procedure has a higher likelihood of insufficient weight loss, compared to gastric bypass. Patients who do not lose enough weight may require additional surgery.
