Adjustable Gastric Banding

Adjustable gastric banding surgery is one of the bariatric surgery procedures available at MidMichigan Medical Center - Gratiot in Alma and at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland. This is a reversible, adjustable surgery that does not require stapling or separating the stomach.

Adjustable gastric banding surgery places an adjustable silicone band around the upper part of the stomach, creating a smaller pouch. The stomach pouch subsequently feels full more quickly. By limiting the amount of food that can be eaten, the patient's weight decreases until a stable weight can be maintained. The band can be adjusted to further restrict food intake. Adjustments are made by injecting or removing fluid via a port under the skin of the abdomen. This allows for optimal weight loss while controlling side effects.

The operation also can be reversed, allowing the stomach to return to normal size. Reversal, however, usually results in patients regaining weight.

Advantages of Adjustable Gastric Banding

  • The band can be adjusted to the needs of individual patients. It can be tightened to further restrict the passage of food if patients don't feel full after meals.
  • The operation can be reversed because the stomach is not permanently altered by the surgery.
  • One to two years after surgery, the average excess weight loss is about 40 percent.

Disadvantages of Adjustable Gastric Banding

  • Complications can occur from band slippage, pouch dilation, erosion of the band into the stomach and infections
  • Weight loss is achieved at a slower rate than other procedures; however, final outcomes can be comparable to other methods if patients are consistent in their eating habits and exercise levels.
