Dawn Bennett, Hemorrhoid Energy Therapy Patient

Dawn Bennett - Clare, MI

"Dr. Nguyen is so caring and thorough. He listens and is concerned with what you're saying."

New Non-Surgical Hemorrhoid Procedure Offered in Clare

Dawn Bennett was 18 when she had her first hemorrhoid surgery.

“I remember it to this day. It was horrible,” said Bennett, now retired and living in Clare. “All the bleeding, discomfort and pain! I was in the hospital for three days and out of commission for two or three weeks, because I couldn’t lift or strain at anything.”

When the problem flared up again recently, Bennett dreaded another surgery. But this time, her experience would be different. Using a new treatment technique called Hemorrhoid Energy Therapy, General Surgeon John Nguyen, D.O, treated Bennett’s hemorrhoids with virtually no pain or bleeding and minimal recovery time.

Bennett’s pain and problems had reached a critical point when she talked to her family practitioner, Kurt Boyd, F.N.P-B.C., M.S.N., who referred her to Dr. Nguyen. At MidMichigan Medical Offices - Clare, only five miles from her house, Dr. Nguyen met with Bennett, examined her and confirmed the need for surgery.

Bennett was glad to be working with Dr. Nguyen, who had earlier taken excellent care of her sister. “He’s so caring and thorough. He sat right down and explained everything to me and invited me to call him if I had any questions. He doesn’t make you feel like you’re on a 10-minute schedule. He listens and is concerned with what you’re saying,” she said.

Although she dreaded it, they were moving ahead with plans for the same procedure she’d had before when Dr. Nguyen gave her some great news. MidMichigan Medical Center - Clare was in the process of starting to offer a new non-surgical procedure for treating hemorrhoids called Hemorrhoid Energy Therapy using the HETTM Bipolar System. If she could hold on for another week, she could have hemorrhoid surgery that was virtually painless.

Dr. Nguyen explained that he could use the new, minimally invasive procedure, to cut off 90 percent of the blood supply to the hemorrhoids, which would then shrink significantly. Other procedures cut off the entire blood supply, causing hemorrhoids to fall off, which results in increased pain and bleeding.

“When I found out about the new approach, I was definitely game for it,” Bennett said. “With surgery the old fashioned way, the hemorrhoids typically come back. With this new way, I understand you’re talking 20 or 30 years before they return, if at all. I really don’t want to have it done again.”

On the day of surgery, Bennett was in the operating room and asked to see the machine. “I just laughed. It reminded me of a large squirt gun with a long barrel,” she said. “They gave me just a sedative, not a heavy anesthetic, and the procedure took about an hour. Afterwards, I went home and went on about my normal daily business. I needed no pain medicine and had no restrictions.”

Bennett said that the staff at the hospital were wonderful. She especially felt they cared when they followed up a few days later.

“They called me and asked how I felt and if I was happy with the surgery. I told them I was delighted,” she said. “I really thank Dr. Nguyen and MidMichigan for getting this new equipment and everybody for being so caring and wanting to eliminate as much pain for their patients as they can. Nobody likes having hemorrhoid surgery, but this was a breeze."

General Surgeon John Nguyen, D.O., and his colleague Robert Nunoo, M.D., are currently accepting new patients with a referral from a primary care provider. Those who would like referral assistance may contact their office at (989) 802-8773.
