Sheila Arnold, Partial Knee Replacement Patient

Sheila Arnold - Freeland, MI

"I’m able to walk up and down the stairs with the confidence that I won’t fall."

Getting Back to Her Garden After a Partial Knee Replacement

Avid gardener Sheila Arnold started noticing difficulty with her legs when she was working in her yard last summer. “It was really hard to get up from kneeling, and by the end of the day, I was limping,” she said. Since she hadn’t suffered this type of discomfort before, she made an appointment with her primary care provider to look into it.

Arnold’s primary care provider recommended that she see Orthopedic Surgeon David Bortel, M.D., who, after examining her leg, determined that she needed a partial knee replacement. She had her surgery in February and was amazed how smooth the procedure went.

“My surgery was outpatient, and I was able to go home the same day,” she said. “Immediately after surgery, I felt great. I had to walk around the unit with a walker twice before I could be discharged, and I remember seeing Dr. Bortel there and being able to thank him.” Sheila now participated in physical therapy at MidMichigan Health Park – Freeland and also does home exercises to help strengthen her leg and improve her mobility.

In addition to having a good experience with surgery, Sheila was very pleased with her orthopedic surgeon. “I would definitely recommend Dr. Bortel to anyone needing to see an orthopedic surgeon,” she said. “Being able to go home the same day as my surgery, being able to walk right away and sleep in my own bed that night was great.”

Since her surgery just a few months ago, Sheila has already noticed a change in the way she’s able to get around. “My knee doesn’t buckle or become unstable anymore,” she said. “I’m able to walk up and down the stairs with the confidence that I won’t fall.”

While she admits it was difficult to stay home from work for two weeks, Arnold doesn’t have any regrets about having surgery. “It never crossed my mind to even put off the surgery,” she said. “I wanted to be back to 100 percent as soon as possible. Life is too short to suffer when there is no reason to!”
