Questions/Concerns After Surgery

Follow up appointment information as well as thorough discharge instructions will be provided and reviewed with you and your support person prior to returning home. These instructions will include information regarding activity restrictions, incision care, brace specifications, and additional medication information as needed. Be sure to ask for clarification if you have any questions with these instructions or reach out to your neurosurgeon’s office for support.

Indications of when to notify your neurosurgeon

  • New numbness or tingling
  • Increased pain
  • Fever of 101 degrees or higher
  • Inability to urinate
  • Incision redness, swelling, excessive drainage or pus at the incision site
  • Separation of incision skin edges
  • Pain in calf when walking or associated with redness, warmth or swelling of the lower limb

Indications of when to go to the emergency department

  • You have chest pain.
  • You develop dizzy spells or fainting while standing.
  • You develop shortness of breath or have trouble breathing.
