Jack Lynch

Grandfather, Attorney and Cancer Survivor

Mt. Pleasant, Michigan

"The care at MidMichigan Gratiot Cancer Center reminded me of the quality care I received at Mayo Clinic, only closer to home."

Now Free of Cancer, He Lives Life to the Fullest

Cancer is a word no one wants to hear; but a cancer diagnosis was not a surprise for Alma resident John (Jack) Lynch.

“I began noticing blood in my stool,” said the 72-year-old trial lawyer. “After researching the possible causes on the Mayo Clinic Web site, my wife encouraged me to see my doctor. Unfortunately, I waited four months.”

Jack’s primary care physician referred him to a general surgeon in Alma. After a colonoscopy identified a tumor in the bowel, Jack met with a comprehensive team that included his surgeon, a medical oncologist, and a radiation oncologist.

The doctors developed a personal treatment plan for Jack, and he was treated at MidMichigan Gratiot Cancer Center in Alma.

“I didn’t worry about being sick. I had confidence in the staff at MidMichigan Gratiot Cancer Center,” Lynch said. “The staff reminded me of the same type of quality care I had previously received at Mayo Clinic, only closer to home. They impressed me with the way they treated their patients and each other.”

Although Jack underwent both radiation and chemotherapy treatments, he missed only five days of work while he was hospitalized. His tumor has “disappeared” for now, shrunk beyond recognition.

In addition to the care he received at MidMichigan Gratiot Cancer Center, Jack attributes his recovery to his positive attitude and the strong support of his wife, children and grandchildren. He looks forward to future trips together to enjoy fishing, hunting and scuba diving.

“The possibility of dying can come upon us at any time,” he said. “Live life to the fullest and enjoy each day.”
