Mindi Smith, Ablation Patient

Mindi Smith - Midland, MI

"I was surprised that ablation could be done right in the office instead of going the hospital. I liked being able to schedule it within a week and be there with people that I knew."

Her Energy Is Back After a Brief Office Procedure Provides an Alternative to Hysterectomy

Mindi Smith of Midland was relieved to avoid major surgery with endometrial ablation performed right in the doctor’s office by Obstetrician-Gynecologist Cheryl Dwyer, D.O. With minimal discomfort and fast recovery, the procedure relieved her heavy menstrual bleeding. Before long Mindi welcomed the return of her normal energy levels.

Before the surgery, Mindi thought she was just worn out from working hard to care for her family and running the busy preschool she opened in 2001. “I had been exhausted for about two years and thought about getting out of day care,” she said. “I was very fatigued and had to take ibuprofen 2 or 3 times a day. My muscles were weak. Anytime I sat down I just wanted to sleep.”

Then blood work taken at her regular physical showed Mindi had very low iron levels caused by her heavy periods. At last she had an explanation and, thankfully, a solution.

When Mindi consulted Dr. Dwyer about her treatment options, endometrial ablation sounded like an excellent, noninvasive alternative to hysterectomy. Taking birth control pills was another approach, but Mindy had tubal ligation after she and her husband, Jason, completed their family with the birth of their fourth daughter, and she didn’t want the possible side effects of hormones.

“It was a surprise to me that ablation could be done right in the office instead of going the hospital, but Dr. Dwyer told me they’d been doing the procedure there for several months,” she said. “I felt good about it. I liked being able to schedule it within a week and be there with people that I knew.”

Dr. Dwyer said her patients are elated that they don’t have to go to the hospital to have endometrial ablation.

“Women are busy, and ablation takes little time out of their daily lives,” said Dr. Dwyer. “They can come in and then go home. They get good results and resolve their bleeding problems with less risk and less impact on their lifestyle compared to hysterectomy.”

To make sure Mindi was a good candidate for the procedure, Dr. Dwyer performed an ultrasound and was very thorough in asking questions about her symptoms. Mindi learned the procedure takes about 90 seconds to two minutes to remove the lining of the uterus to control the excessive bleeding. She would arrive an hour beforehand to take medication and then stay about two hours for observation.

“I had not had anything like this done before, but Dr. Dwyer and her staff made me feel very comfortable during the procedure,” Mindi said. “There was no pain. I wasn’t completely out, so they told me everything they were doing and what they would do next. Even after the anesthetic wore off, my pain level was very low. There was only slight cramping, and it took just a day to recuperate.”

Mindi’s iron levels gradually rose after having the procedure and two follow-up infusions, and increasing the iron in her diet. “I can tell it’s definitely helped. I’ve told friends how much it has helped,” she said. “I feel great now, energized. I’m back to an energy level that had been down a good two years.

“Anyone who is dealing with heavy periods and is done having children should look into this procedure. Having ablation, and being able to do it right in my gynecologist’s office, worked out great for me.”
