Trauma is the number one killer of Americans under age 45 and the leading cause of death from trauma is uncontrolled bleeding. After a traumatic accident or injury, it can take as little as five minutes for someone to bleed to death.

The Stop the Bleed Program was inspired by the Sandy Hook school shooting to teach blood control techniques in case of an emergency. Stop the Bleed training takes about one hour.

We teach the following:

  • How to recognize life threatening bleeding and how to respond and manage bleeding until first responders arrive.
  • How to critically think through some problems, like, if the first tourniquet fails, what will they do?

Participants will:

  • Watch a presentation and practice applying a tourniquet to limbs and packing wounds with gauze.
  • Practice on each other and then self-apply their own tourniquets using one hand.

You don’t have to have any medical training. This course is for everyone. If bystanders know how to respond, a victim’s odds of survival are much higher. It is a simple, life-saving, method that anyone can learn. This training is not just for large events, like an active shooter situation, but most likely will be used if needed for a traumatic injury like a car accident or a slip and fall into glass.

This training is especially beneficial to rural residents who live farther away from the nearest hospital. Paramedics will always respond immediately, but distance, weather, and road conditions play a factor in how soon responders can get to a victim. Having citizens trained in bleeding control can save lives in an environment where emergency response is hindered by distance, a factor that contributes to high unintentional injury death rates, especially those due to motor vehicle accidents.
