War Memorial Hospital Approves Negotiations with MidMichigan Health

The War Memorial Hospital (WMH) Board of Trustees took action on Friday, April 9, giving approval to move into a nonbinding letter of intent with MidMichigan Health. MidMichigan Health is a non-profit health system, headquartered in Midland, Michigan, covering a 23-county region with medical centers in Alpena, Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Midland, Mt. Pleasant and West Branch. The health system also includes urgent care centers, home health, virtual care, physicians, as well as medical offices in more than 30 specialties and subspecialties including cardiology, hematology/oncology, orthopedics, vascular surgery, family medicine and more. A leader in providing award-winning, high-quality care, MidMichigan Health was recently awarded by the Michigan Baldrige examiners the 2021 Michigan Performance Excellence Award, the state’s highest honor for organizations that have demonstrated outstanding performance, leadership, and operational excellence.

“A part of downtown Sault Ste. Marie for more than 100 years, War Memorial has a strong history of providing exceptional services to its patients and community. However, health care has and continues to evolve and we want to ensure we are positioned successfully to give our patients and community the very best care they deserve for the next 100 years and beyond,” said David Jahn, FACHE, president and CEO, War Memorial Hospital. “We have carefully reviewed partnership options and MidMichigan Health’s purpose to Create Healthy Communities – Together is a perfect fit for our hospital. Among the many benefits, an affiliation with MidMichigan will allow War Memorial to continue to grow, offer more specialty services and provide even greater care to our patients so that they can continue to receive care close to home.”

Over the last several months, WMH board of trustees and hospital leadership has narrowed down potential partners from six to two, a process which included presentations, on-site visits, numerous phone calls and feedback sessions.

“This is a very exciting time for War Memorial and MidMichigan Health” said Scott Shackleton, board chairman of War Memorial Hospital. “During this next stage of partnership negotiations we will carefully examine the details that will help to advance the care that War Memorial can and will provide. We are excited for the next steps and what it will mean to our community.”

“War Memorial’s interest in MidMichigan Health is a reflection of how others are looking to us to strengthen the depth and breadth of their services because we offer quality care and a commitment of care close to home” said Diane Postler-Slattery, Ph.D., FACHE, president and CEO, MidMichigan Health. “We are looking forward to the next phase of our partnership negotiations and in the very near future where we can all celebrate that our ‘Go-To Place’ just got bigger!  We fully believe both MidMichigan and War Memorial align very nicely in our values and always putting our patients first. We will both benefit from this affiliation and will be stronger together. “
