Medical Oncologist/Hematologist Joins Comprehensive Cancer Care Team

Medical Oncologist and Hematologist Anas Alsara, M.D., has joined the comprehensive cancer care team at MidMichigan Health. This team includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, specialized surgeons, as well as breast and lung health nurse navigators. Dr. Alsara’s main office is located in the Cancer Center at 4500 Campus Ridge Drive, on the campus of MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland. He joins Medical Oncologists and Hematologists Daniel Y. Danso, M.D., Isabelle Le, M.D., and Thomas Regenbogen, M.D.

Dr. Alsara graduate with honors from Damascus University in Syria. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago and hematology and oncology fellowship at Michigan State University. He served as a chief fellow in his fellowship program. Dr. Alsara was named the Inaugural Fellow of the Year.

Prior to starting training in hematology and oncology, Dr. Alsara worked as a hospitalist where he had the opportunity to care for many cancer patients. According to Dr. Alsara, his work as a hospitalist physician enhanced his interpersonal skills. “I listen to my patient’s concerns and integrate them in their plan of care,” said Dr. Alsara. “I don’t simply treat the disease, I treat the people.” He strives to treat every patient like a family member and wants to work with his patients to achieve their goals in a compassionate way.

“I am dedicated to educating my patients and improving their overall wellness,” adds Dr. Alsara.

Dr. Alsara also has an extensive background in research. He completed a clinical research fellowship at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Alsara believes clinical trials are crucial in improving our understanding of cancer and in developing more advanced tools in the battle against the disease.

When asked about the most satisfying aspects of his work, Dr. Alsara shared that he wants to make a positive impact on his patient’s life. “I want my patients to trust that I have their best interests at heart,” he added.

As a medical oncologist and hematologist, Dr. Alsara has in-depth expertise in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of various forms of cancer, specifically lung, gastrointestinal and breast as well as hematological malignancies. He is also interested in benign hematological disorders.

When asked about the biggest advancements in the field of oncology, Dr. Alsara mentioned the rapidly evolving individualizing of cancer care which offers tremendous hope for the patients and their families.

In his free time, Dr. Alsara enjoys biking, traveling and spending time with his family.
