Seeing Stars: Ratings and Reviews Help Patients Make Informed Choices
Visitors to www.midmichigan.org/doctors are seeing stars as patient ratings and reviews are now a regular feature of the Find-a-Doctor pages on the website. The ratings and reviews are from verified patients who had an outpatient appointment with a provider employed by MidMichigan Health and then completed a follow-up survey.
MidMichigan Health is now publishing patient ratings and reviews on the Find-a-Doctor pages of its website and on popular search engines such as Google. The ratings and reviews are from verified patients who had an outpatient appointment with a provider employed by MidMichigan Health and then completed a follow-up survey.
“Ratings and reviews help our patients make more informed choices while helping us to continuously improve,” said Paul Berg, M.D., president of MidMichigan Physicians Group. “Patients now expect to be able to see reviews before choosing a doctor or making an appointment, thanks in part to the ‘Amazon Effect.’ However, most independent review sites lack sufficient data to give an accurate picture of the care we provide. We routinely survey patients at all of our outpatient practices, so it made sense to start transparently sharing that feedback. In doing so, we introduce significantly more data points from verified patients, which we feel is more representative and useful.”

To protect patient privacy and maintain integrity of the data, MidMichigan uses an expert third-party survey partner called Professional Research Consultants to collect and report the data. The data is de-identified so that patients can feel comfortable providing open and honest feedback. MidMichigan uses online tools created by Doctor.com to moderate and publish the data to the web.
While MidMichigan is committed to sharing the comments whether positive or negative, a team of web specialists reviews every comment prior to publication to ensure it does not contain:
- Protected health information (PHI), that is information that could personally identify a patient
- Offensive language, such as profanity or discriminatory statements
- Potentially libelous material
- Comments about other providers or staff who are not part of the provider’s practice
- Information that is not related to the patient care or patient experience offered by that provider or their practice
Those who would like to view the ratings and reviews may search for providers on www.midmichigan.org/doctors.
