This year’s half marathon at the Aliferis Race will be Sarah Morrison’s 26th. As an avid runner, she is eager for another chance to compete. Equally important for Sarah is the opportunity to continue to be a proponent for health and fitness within her community along with husband Chris and children Odessa and Oz as the 2019 Aliferis Memorial Race Honorary Chairs.

Last year, each member of the Morrison family participated in the race and they look forward to doing it again. “I love participating in the Aliferis Race as a family because I want my children to feel the confidence that fitness brings to life. When they see their parent's working out, they get excited about doing it too. I want them to think it is as much a part of their routine as brushing their teeth and also to experience the joy that comes from working hard to earn something.”

Chris works as a paramedic/firefighter for City of Alpena and Sarah is communications director for Bay Athletic Club (BAC). Both teach group classes and offer their expertise as personal trainers at BAC, with Sarah coaching a Train to Run group for more than five years. The kids will be running the mile again this year, and Chris may join Sarah for the half marathon.

“What makes this half marathon special is the location and the people,” says Sarah. “We meet at the hospital and hop on a bus as friends and neighbors. It is the best bus ride I've ever taken to a race, everyone talking and sharing the excitement. The trail is gorgeous; I love that I just run and don't have to backtrack. Last year I met a goal and got a personal record with a time under two hours!”

The 18th Annual Aliferis Race is hosted by the Business Relations Committee of MidMichigan Health Foundation’s Development Council serving Alpena. It will take place on Saturday, Aug. 31, with the main tent located on the corner of Chisholm Street (U.S.-23) and Johnson Street of MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena’s campus.

In addition to the half marathon, events include an 18.5 mile bike race, 6.5 mile bike tour, 5K run and 1 mile family run/walk. Online registration is open at Race forms are also available in the Medical Center lobby and Fund Development Department, at Bay Athletic Club, and at a variety of locations in and around Alpena, including the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce. All pre-registrants will receive a t-shirt and a chance at several prizes, including University of Michigan football tickets which will be drawn after the conclusion of the events during awards. Individuals must be present to win.

“We certainly appreciate the Morrison family heading up the event this year,” said Ann Diamond, MidMichigan Health Foundation, director. “Their passion for fitness and community are great examples of what this race has always been about: enjoying the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles as individuals and as a family. We know their enthusiasm will inspire others.”
