Valentines were also distributed to patients thanks to local children groups.

From bright red knitted baby hats to paper Valentine hearts containing sweet messages of caring, patients young and old were surprised with special gifts of kindness on Valentine’s Day at MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland.

Midland resident Linda Prieto made and donated red baby hats to mark the Valentine’s Day holiday and February as Heart Awareness Month. Prieto regularly makes and donates hats for the babies born at the Medical Center.

“I enjoy making the hats in pastel colors but thought it would be nice to change it up a bit and recognize both Valentine’s Day and February being Heart Month,” explained Prieto. “Making and giving away the hats is my way of celebrating the love that a new baby represents and what better time than Valentine’s Day.”

In addition, paper Valentine cards were crafted by some local children groups. They included the Children’s Circle (ages 4-11) and the middle school class (ages 12-15) of the Religious Education Program at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Midland. Children from St. John’s Episcopal Preschool (ages 4 – 5) also made cards containing Valentine greetings. The cards were placed on patient meal trays with some also distributed to patients receiving chemotherapy and infusion services at the Cancer Center.

“Witnessing acts such as these, especially from children, reminds us all of the power of kindness and how it can make such a difference in the life of someone whether in times of joy or suffering,” said Donna J. Rapp, president, MidMichigan Health Foundation. “We are grateful for these special gifts that brought so many smiles.”
