Physical Therapy Team Brings Experience and Expertise to Bay City

To support the comprehensive orthopedics and sports medicine services offered at MidMichigan Health Park–Bay, MidMichigan has assembled an experienced team of physical therapists. This team focuses on preventing and healing injuries and disabilities that affect an individual’s capacity to perform normal daily tasks, as well as assisting athletes to return to their sport safely and quickly.
Team members include Physical Therapists Tim Axtell, M.S.P.T., O.M.P.T., and Michael Zahn M.S.P.T., O.M.P.T., as well as Physical Therapist Assistant Emily Buchanan, P.T.A. Their areas of specialty include orthopedics; neck, shoulder and arm treatment; sports injuries; manual therapy; motion analysis for golf throwing and running; spine care, as well as total joint rehabilitation. In addition, both Axtell and Zahn have additional training in gait analysis, as well as foot and ankle biomechanics.
Axtell completed his undergraduate degree in applied biology and sports medicine at Ferris State University and his master’s degree in physical therapy at Central Michigan University. He also completed post-graduate studies in orthopedic manual physical therapy at Oakland University. Axtell began his career as an athletic trainer and now has more than 20 years of experience in the field. His special interests include orthopedics; manual therapy; sports medicine; and neck, shoulder and arm treatment. “Our team is committed to helping each individual achieve his or her personal goals and helping them reach their highest level of function or performance,” he said.
Zahn completed his undergraduate degree in exercise health science from Alma College and his master’s degree in physical therapy at Central Michigan University. He also completed post-graduate studies in orthopedic manual physical therapy at Oakland University. Zahn has more than 19 years of experience in the field. His special interests include orthopedics, manual therapy, sports medicine, lower back pain and lower extremity dysfunction. "My career started in Bay City,” he said. “I am excited for the opportunity to return to the region to share my passion and experience in physical therapy with the residents of the Great Lakes Bay Region. The new Bay City facility will allow me to help my patients in a comfortable setting while working closely with other team members with their goals in mind."
Buchanan completed her associate degree in applied science from Delta College and is a certified massage therapist. She has served as a physical therapist assistant at MidMichigan for more than 13 years. "I am most passionate about seeing my patients feeling better, giving them the encouragement, confidence and knowledge to help them get back to a better quality of life,” she said.
