Patients to Benefit from Advanced Technology for Treating Heart Rhythm Disorders
Heart patients served by MidMichigan Health will benefit from an upgraded cardiac mapping and ablation system as a result of the MidMichigan Health Foundation’s annual Gifts of Wellness campaign. Donations totaling more than $108,000 will support the purchase of this technology, as well as other medical equipment enhancing patient care throughout the health system. In addition, several gifts received were designated to the MidMichigan Health Foundation Endowment Fund, which will support future projects and needs benefitting patients throughout MidMichigan Health.
The cardiac mapping and ablation system will help patients by more precisely pinpointing electrical disturbances within the heart using 3-D mapping and an ablation system to restore the patient to normal heart rhythm.
“The cardiac mapping and ablation system enables electrophysiologists (EP) to create a real-time view of the heart by positioning a catheter to map the electrical activity in the chambers of the heart,” explained Sunita Vadakath, M.D., director of cardiovascular services, MidMichigan Health. “Guided by this map, the EP places a catheter into the patient’s heart to pinpoint the source of the abnormal electrical signals. Once located the catheters transmit radiofrequency waves, generating enough heat to produce a small scar on the targeted part of the heart tissue. This process blocks the abnormal electrical impulses causing the heart rhythm disorder. It is minimally invasive, precise and effective in restoring a patient to a normal heart rhythm.”
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death of men and women both in the region served by MidMichigan Health and across the United States.
“Having a comprehensive heart program close to home can mean the difference between a healthy recovery and irreversible heart damage,” added Dr. Vadakath. “Being in the right place with the right physicians is critical. Having a program with the most advanced technology available, such as the cardiac mapping and ablation system, takes the level of care one step further for our heart patients. We appreciate the support received that is helping to make this possible.”
The funds for the cardiac and ablation system were raised through the 2017 Gifts of Wellness campaign. This donor recognition program annually totals all contributions that a donor makes to the MidMichigan Health Foundation to support any subsidiary of MidMichigan during the year. This information establishes the donor’s distinct level of giving and corresponding recognition for that year.
“We would not have the quality of facilities or advanced medical equipment we have without donor support,” said Donna Rapp, president, MidMichigan Health Foundation. “We consider each gift affirmation of the important role MidMichigan has in improving the health of the people that reside in the communities and region we are privileged to serve.”
