Collaboration Brings Breast Reconstruction Clinic to Midland

MidMichigan Health, in collaboration with Michigan Medicine, the health care division of the University of Michigan, has established a Breast Reconstruction Clinic in Midland. This collaboration of surgeons allows for immediate breast reconstruction to be performed at the same time as the mastectomy, reducing the length of stay for the patient and need for hospital readmission.

“The Breast Reconstruction Clinic is another exciting milestone in our partnership with Michigan Medicine,” said Joan Herbert, Pharm.D., director of oncology services at MidMichigan Health. “In addition to seeing patients, physicians from the University of Michigan are now performing surgery side-by-side with Kelly Wirsing, M.D., the medical director of the Breast Health Program at the Center for Women’s Health, to provide the best possible outcome for each patient. We’re thrilled to be able to better serve our patients with this specialty clinic, and to continue to collaborate with Michigan Medicine to expand the services we offer.”

Breast Reconstruction Clinic health care providers include Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons Paul Cederna, M.D., and Adeyiza Momoh, M.D., who serve on the medical staff at the University of Michigan, as well as MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland.

Dr. Cederna is the Robert Orneal Professor of Plastic Surgery, chief of the section of Plastic Surgery, and professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. He directs the University of Michigan’s Neuromuscular Research Laboratory. As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Cederna specializes in breast reconstruction, burn reconstruction, minimally invasive plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery, peripheral nerve surgery and general reconstruction.

Currently, Dr. Momoh serves as a clinical associate professor of surgery in the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan. He received his medical degree from Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, and completed a residency in general surgery and plastic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Momoh has also completed a fellowship in microsurgical breast reconstruction at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

A physician referral is required to become a patient of the Breast Reconstruction Clinic. Those who would like more information may contact the Center for Women’s Health at (989) 837-9071
