Former MidMichigan Gladwin Pines Resident Gains Wisdom on Inner Strength and Preparedness
Carolyn Tackett is an unlikely promoter for MidMichigan Gladwin Pines long-term residency program, since she no longer resides at Gladwin Pines - but that is the beauty of her story. Carolyn moved to the Gladwin area to be near her son and his family. After relocating from the Canton area, Carolyn was enjoying living near her grandchildren while being on her own in a Gladwin apartment.
Then one day in November 2012, Carolyn had visited with her son and spoken to her daughter on what seemed like a usual day. When she got up from her chair to walk to another part of her apartment, Carolyn became lightheaded and fell. Losing consciousness, Carolyn was on the floor for several hours before she heard her neighbor outside. She called for help and the paramedics were contacted to assist her.
Carolyn has diabetes and learned that her blood sugar was dangerously low upon arriving at the MidMichigan Medical Center–Gladwin. Once she was stabilized, Carolyn was transferred to MidMichigan Medical Center–Midland where she stayed for more than a week. Carolyn was discharged to Gladwin Pines with neuropathy in her legs. She believed that she had permanently lost the ability to walk and was moving to Gladwin Pines for good.
Carolyn recalls, “I just wanted to curl up in a ball and hide under the blankets, never to see daylight again, but the people at Gladwin Pines wouldn’t let me lose myself in that hopelessness. The activities coordinator and aides encouraged me to attend outings and events while the rehabilitation department worked with me on regaining the use of my legs. They got me better. I became well enough to leave, even though I thought I was going to live there forever.”
Carolyn was able to move to Horizons Senior Living and is looking forward to returning to her own apartment soon. Carolyn recalled the irony of having been incapacitated in her fall that initiated her stay at Gladwin Pines, “My son and I had spoken to a representative of a personal emergency response system (PERS) company and had an appointment scheduled to have a unit delivered to my apartment. I had my emergency before the unit was delivered. I know now that one day can make a difference and I will be sure to have a PERS delivered before I return to my apartment.”
Carolyn said, “I used to work in a nursing home in Detroit and I know the preconceived notions that people have about them. There are good nursing homes and bad ones. Gladwin Pines is a very good nursing home. I can’t say enough about all they did to help me, emotionally and physically. I am thankful for Gladwin Pines.”
