In Imaging Nurse Services, a radiology nurse is involved with the assessment, planning, and care of patients who undergo diagnostic, interventional, and therapeutic procedures. As such, a radiology nurse, often referred to as a radiological nurse, must have a high level of technical expertise and knowledge of radiologic science. Radiology nurses are typically ICU trained nurses with additional specialty training.

We are an 8 bay unit; 4 procedural bays and 4 prep/recover bays. Patients are cared for pre, during, and post procedure with nurses attending the patient in a variety of settings and modalities. Patients arrive in the department for pre-procedure, are transported to the modality (CT, Ultrasound, MRI, etc.) for the procedure and then back to the department for recovery. Radiology nurses are in multiple modality settings throughout the day rather than in a traditional IR suite; we are the nursing support for all Imaging Services.

Staffing typically consists of 6 RNs and 2 Assistants. Assistants act as clerks and have additional training to assist during procedures.

Imaging Nurse Services is open from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday and are on-call on weekends and holidays for emergent procedures.

Because we are modality driven, orientation is often with several staff in multiple areas, ensuring exposure and mastery of all procedures. Radiology nurses may be in CT with a patient having cryoablation in the morning and assisting with an ultrasound guided paracentesis in the afternoon. Orientation is tailored to fit the needs of the orientation.
