How to Maintain, Renew or Update Your Privileges

As a member of the medical staff at MidMichigan Health, you are responsible for maintaining certain "expirables," as well as supplying materials for reappointment to the medical staff when this comes due. We are here to help you with both of these topics. Learn more in the sections below.

Should you have the need to add additional privileges or make changes to your medical staff status, you may contact Medical Staff Services by phone or email using the links listed on this page.

Expirables

Expirables include the following items that must be kept up-to-date to maintain your medical staff privileges:

License to Practice

  • Renewals must be primary source verified directly with the licensing board by the Central Verification Office (CVO).
  • The day after license expiration, membership and privileges are suspended and practitioners cannot work at the entity until the CVO verifies renewal directly with the licensing board.

Malpractice Insurance

  • A copy of the renewed malpractice insurance certification must be received by the Central Verification Office (CVO) prior to expiration.
  • The CVO reviews a monthly list of practitioners who malpractice insurance will expire within the next 30 days.
  • The day after malpractice insurance expiration all MidMichigan entities are notified of those practitioners who have not submitted a renewed insurance certificate to the expiration date. Privileges are automatically relinquished and practitioners cannot work at the entity until the CVO receives a copy of current malpractice insurance.

DEA Certificate

  • The Central Verification Office (CVO) reviews a monthly list of practitioners whose DEA certificate will expire within the next 30 days.
  • DEA registration website is accessed to determine what DEA registrations have been renewed.
  • The day after the DEA certificate expiration all MidMichigan Health entities are notified of those practitioners who have not submitted a renewed certificate to the CVO. Prescriptive authority is automatically relinquished and practitioners cannot prescribe medications at the entity until the CVO receives confirmation of DEA renewal

Board Certification

  • Renewals must be primary source verified directly with the certifying board by the Central Verification Office.
  • If your boards expire or lapse, please contact the Central Verification Office to notify them of your certification and to receive further instructions.

Reappointment

Reappointment is the process of re-evaluating a practitioner’s current competency after they have been appointed to the medical staff or professional staff at a MidMichigan Health entity.

Reappointment Process

  • The Central Verification Office (CVO) will send each practitioner a reappointment packet approximately six months prior to the expiration of their appointment to the medical staff.
  • Practitioners need to complete the reappointment form, checking whether the demographic information currently in our database is correct and completing new disclosure questions.
  • Practitioners also must complete a new privilege form indicating the privileges they want to perform upon reappointment. Documentation required for any requested privileges must be submitted with the reappointment packet.
  • The CVO processes each practitioner’s reappointment paperwork upon receipt.
  • A practitioner’s reappointment must be approved by the respective MidMichigan Health Board of Directors prior to the expiration of the initial appointment or previous reappointment.
  • MidMichigan reappoints each practitioner every 24 months via a schedule based on their start date. Some practitioners may be reappointed in less than 24 months depending on their initial approval date.
