Education & Training

The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, DOCTOR OF MEDICINE

Grant Medical Center, Columbus, OH, FAMILY MEDICINE

Jennifer Dear, M.D., specializes in family medicine. She provides preventive and general health care to patients of all ages and particularly enjoys caring for entire families.

Dr. Dear said she knew from a young age that she wanted a career in medicine. “When I thought about becoming a doctor, family medicine was what I had in mind,” she said. “While I enjoy the problem-solving nature of medicine and the science of medicine, what I really enjoy is taking care of people.” In addition to more than 12 years experience as a board-certified family medicine physician, Dr. Dear was also the medical director of an urgent care center for several years.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Dear said the partnership between patient and physician works best if it is based on mutual respect, trust and good communication. “Patients have to be able to trust their health care provider and I try to earn their trust by listening,” she said. “It is the only way I can gather the facts and information I need to help them.”

She believes patients can help themselves by sharing as much information as possible and her engaging personality helps people open up. “Details matter,” Dr. Dear said. “When patients tell me what’s going on in their lives, as well as their physical symptoms, it helps me figure out what’s wrong.”

Dr. Dear practices preventive medicine as well as disease management. “It’s always better to avoid a health problem and many chronic conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes are largely preventable – even reversible – with lifestyle changes,” she said.

She also believes patients have a responsibility to listen to her advice and give her feedback. “Ultimately we are each responsible for our own health,” Dr. Dear said. “I can tell a patient all about their condition and how it’s treated and then it is their responsibility to follow the treatment plan,” she said. “When patients tell me what will work for them and what won’t, we can develop a plan that will work for them. I want my patients to know that we are partners in their health and to feel confident that they have a physician who knows them and listens to them.”

Originally from Toledo, Dr. Dear and her family chose to settle in Michigan so they could enjoy the state’s natural beauty and recreation opportunities. She and her husband, Raully, are raising three young boys. As a family they enjoy spending time together camping, playing strategic board games and card games, and geocaching.
