Physician Assistant Sheri Fox Among First to be Certified in Functional Medicine
Family Medicine Physician Assistant Sheri Fox, P.A.-C., of MidMichigan Health Park–Houghton Lake, has been certified in functional medicine by the Institute for Functional Medicine. She is among the first class to receive such a certification.
“I chose to obtain a certification in functional medicine because I wanted a more comprehensive framework in which to practice patient centered care instead of disease centered care,” Fox said. “Functional medicine does this by looking at the root cause of illness instead of focusing on treating symptoms.”
Functional medicine addresses family and personal history, physiology, genetics and lifestyle, including social and physical environmental factors affecting an individual’s health. Through functional medicine, clinicians utilize preventive techniques such as nutrition, diet and exercise to improve a patient’s health. Each person is considered as a unique individual with unique responses to the interplay between their genes and their environment.
Functional medicine is based on cutting edge science while incorporating integrative medicine with combinations of drugs, botanicals, herbal supplements, therapeutics diets, detox programs or stress management techniques. It encourages a therapeutic partnership between patient and provider and empowers the patient to take ownership of their own healing path.
“It is the kind of care I chose for myself and my family,” Fox said. “While functional medicine is applicable to any chronic disease, I am excited to be able to offer this to patients who are motivated and open to making changes that will affirm health in their lives, she explained.
