Quality and Patient Safety

  • Thomson Reuters 10 Top Health Systems – In 2011, MidMichigan Health was named in the top 20 percent of health systems in the nation by Thomson Reuters, which recognized the 57 best-performing systems. The study was based on of the analysis of 285 organizations. MidMichigan Health was one of four health systems in Michigan to be recognized. MidMichigan also received this award in 2009 and 2010.
  • Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®  – MidMichigan's Medical Centers in Alma and Midland were recognized among the nation's 100 Top Hospitals in 2009 for excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, financial performance and efficiency. The Medical Center in Midland also received this award in 2008 and 2007. The Medical Center in Alma also received the award in 2007, and MidMichigan Medical Center - Clare also received the honor in 2007.
  • MidMichigan Medical Center-Clare received accreditation from The Joint Commission in 2011 with The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for outstanding scores during accreditation.
  • Governor’s Award of Excellence for Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care – This award honors Michigan hospitals that are using proven, evidence-based practices to improve patient care. MidMichigan’s Medical Centers in Alma, Clare and Gladwin all received this award in 2007. (OK)

  • Governor’s Recognition of Excellence – This award recognizes top performers in improving patient safety and quality of care. MidMichigan Medical Center–Gladwin was one of only 18 hospitals in Michigan to receive this recognition in 2007. (OK)
  • Governor’s Award for Quality Care – MidMichigan Stratford Village and MidMichigan Home Care received this award in 2002, which recognizes outstanding hospices, nursing homes, homes for the aged and adult foster care facilities, state-licensed childcare homes and centers, and before/after school programs.
  • Governor’s Award for Health Information Technology – MidMichigan Medical Center–Midland was recognized for Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE). (can’t find year)
  • Ergonomic Success Award – In 2010, MidMichigan Medical Center–Gladwin received the state's highest Ergonomic Success Award for its work in preventing and reducing employee injuries. The award was given by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA), based on data from 2008.
  • The Joint Commission: Top Performer on Key Quality Measures Recognition In 2011, MidMichigan Medical Center–Gladwin was named one of the nation’s top performing hospitals on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. The Medical Center is one of only 405 U.S. hospitals that earned the distinction of top performer on key quality measures for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. The Medical Center was recognized as a top performer based on data reported about evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for pneumonia.
  • Rural Health Quality Improvement Award In 2009, 2010 and 2011, MidMichigan Medical Center–Gladwin was recognized for quality improvement by the Michigan Center for Rural Health.
  • NAFE Names MidMichigan One of the Top 10 Non-Profits for Women – In 2011, MidMichigan Health was recognized for the fourth year in a row as one of the top 10 non-profit organizations in the nation for its efforts to recruit, develop, and advance women. The National Association of Female Executives is the largest women's professional and business organization in the country.
  • Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip ReplacementSM - Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network designated MidMichigan Medical Center–Midland as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip ReplacementSM in 2011. Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement are part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association’s expansion of its Blue Distinction® designation. The Blue Distinction designation is awarded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality health care in the areas of bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, knee and hip replacement, spine surgery and transplants. The program is part of The Blues® efforts to collaborate with physicians and medical facilities to improve the overall quality and safety of specialty care.
  • Professional Research Consultants (PRC) 5-Star Excellence Award for Quality of Care – MidMichigan Medical Center–Gratiot's inpatient medical/pediatric care unit received the 2010 Professional Research Consultants (PRC) 5-Star Excellence Award for Quality of Care. The 5-Star Excellence Award is given annually to health care facilities whose inpatient units have scored in the top 10 percent of PRC’s national client database. This award is based on the percentage of patients who rated the medical/pediatric care unit “excellent” for overall quality of care.
  • Professional Research Consultant (PRC) 5-Star Award for Patient Loyalty – The OB Department at MidMichigan Medical Center–Midland received the 2011 Professional Research Consultant (PRC) 5-Star Award for Patient Loyalty. The 5-Star Award is given annually to healthcare facilities that score in the top 10 percent nationally (at or above the 90th percentile) or higher for “Excellent” responses for Inpatient OB/Gyn overall Quality of Care when compared to other providers in that category. For this award, patient scores were based on data derived from 2010 patients.
  • HealthGrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™ – In 2010, MidMichigan Medical Center–Midland was recognized for the sixth consecutive year by a leading healthcare quality company for patient safety. The HealthGrades Patient Safety in American Hospitals Study applies methodology developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to identify the incident rates of 15 patient safety indicators among Medicare patients at virtually all of the nation's nearly 5,000 nonfederal hospitals.
  • American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Best Employers for Workers Over 50 – MidMichigan Health was recognized in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011 by AARP as an organization that has implemented new and innovative policies in talent management that cross generational lines. The organizations that are recognized for this award are chosen based on their ability to attract and retain top talent in today's multigenerational workforce.
  • Michigan Health & Hospital Association Keystone Center for Patient Safety & Quality – The Intensive Care Units at MidMichigan Medical Center–Gratiot and MidMichigan Medical Center–Clare were recognized in 2008 by the Michigan Health & Hospital Association Keystone Center for Patient Safety & Quality for their “Five Years of Dedication to Making Care Safe”.

Community Benefit

  • Ludwig Community Benefit Award – This award is granted by the Michigan Health & Hospital Association to organizations that have improved the health and well-being of their communities through health care, economic or social initiatives, with demonstrated outcomes and impact. MidMichigan Medical Center–Midland received this award in 2008 for its Smile, Reach, Speech stroke education and screenings initiative. The Smile, Reach, Speech program is now offered by all four of MidMichigan’s Medical Centers and is helping people throughout our service area recognize the warning signs of stroke and respond quickly.
