MIDLAND FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY: 4-YEAR CURICULUM

THE FUTURE OF FAMILY MEDICINE TRAINING

UltrasoundIn today’s medical environment, family physicians are expected to be the stewards of the healthcare system, coordinators of chronic disease management and leaders in the Patient Centered Medical Home. However, training time has slowly been eroded through changes in duty hour rules. Although this is certainly beneficial for the well-being of residents, it has also resulted in the inability to accomplish as much during training as prior graduates. In addition, the medical scope of today’s family practioners is ever-increasing.

Given this new environment, the family medicine residency here in Midland, Michigan is excited and grateful to have been chosen as a pilot program for a 4-year model of training. In four years, our family medicine residents will graduate with a robust medical knowledge base and ample clinical experiences. This will enable them to become not only excellent family physicians for their patients, but also leaders in their communities and health systems. Furthermore, including the concept of an “area of concentration” (AOC) will allow residents to further refine their training to fit their specific future needs. All of us at the residency are excited to begin this new journey in becoming leaders in the new vision of family medicine training.
