Rotations By Discipline

Internal Medicine

  • Adult inpatient medicine service, staffed by a full-time Family Medicine faculty member, a third-year service chief and a first-year resident
  • Direct contact with attendings representing the full spectrum of medical specialties (cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, immunology/allergy, pulmonary medicine, rheumatology, infectious disease, oncology, nephrology)
  • Informal discussions around current patient problems and areas of interest to family practice
  • Family Medicine Service accepts admissions from outlying primary care physicians, and provides consults and preoperative risk assessments

Doctor with BabyObstetrics (Labor & Delivery)

  • Area obstetricians very supportive of family physicians doing deliveries
  • Family medicine residents are the only residents on OB service
  • Participate in all labors and deliveries
  • Average more than 30 deliveries/month/resident 
  • Obstetricians and family physician attendings
  • First assist at Caesarian Sections, opportunity to do them in third year

Pediatrics

  • Inpatient and outpatient experience, emphasizing primary care medical problems
  • Daily newborn nursery and pediatric unit rounds
  • “Mini-lectures” on core content of pediatrics for the family physician, offered 2-3 times per week by Family Medicine faculty
  • Initial management, stabilization and transport of high-risk infants
  • Work with all family physicians and pediatricians admitting to medical center
  • Outpatient experience in busy pediatricians’ offices

Surgical RotationsSurgical Areas

  • One-on-one opportunities with attending surgeons
  • Board-certified surgical specialists in subspecialties (colorectal, vascular, breast, urological, gynecological)
  • Varied inpatient/outpatient experience
  • Outpatient experiences in private physician offices rather than “clinics”
  • Focus on diagnostic pre- and postoperative care
  • Develop first-assist surgical skills

Psychiatry

  • Four psychiatrists and full mental health team
  • Integrated experience in mental health inpatient unit, acute care medical center, outpatient mental health clinics, and community agencies designed to individual resident’s needs
  • Coordination with longitudinal behavioral science curriculum
  • Psychopharmacology for the family physician
  • Psychiatric assessments
  • Psychiatric consultation
  • Medical needs of the psychiatric patient

Dermatology

  • Election of sites in various academic, group practice or private practice settings
  • Complements variety of longitudinal experiences

Neurology

  • Inpatient consultation service
  • Outpatient clinics in general neurology and special diseases
  • Neurology teaching conferences
  • Emphasis on family physician’s role

Respiratory Medicine

  • Inpatient and outpatient pulmonary medicine
  • ENT and allergy
  • Customized to your prior experience and future needs

Occupational MedicineOccupational Medicine

  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute injury
  • Workers’ compensation
  • Disability evaluation of occupational injury and return to work

Emergency Medicine

  • 2 months experience provides a spectrum of seasonal variations in emergency room problems
  • Taught by dedicated emergency medicine physicians, who also provide frequent mini-lectures
  • Work with attendings and consultants
  • Exposure to trauma, acute medical emergencies, surgical crises, psychiatric problems, procedures (lacerations, splinting, lumbar punctures) and routine care

Clinical Seminars

  • Explore curricular areas of family medicine not often included in traditional month-long rotations or elective experiences
  • Small group of second- or third-year residents meets mornings, Monday through Friday
  • Different faculty member each day helps facilitate collaborative discussions or experiential curriculum
  • Curriculum includes:
