Comprehensive Heart and Vascular Team Expanded
Interventional Cardiologist Michael A. Lauer, M.D., has joined MidMichigan Physicians Group and is the newest member of the comprehensive heart and vascular team at MidMichigan Health. This team includes cardiologists, interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologists, as well as vascular, thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons. Dr. Lauer’s main office is located at 301 W. Wackerly Street in Midland. He also sees patients at satellite offices in Clare at MidMichigan Medical Offices–Clare and Houghton Lake at MidMichigan Health Park–Houghton Lake.
Dr. Lauer received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Ohio and completed his residency at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He went on to complete fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Dr. Lauer is the recipient of the James Stephens Quality Award for his leadership in the Regional ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) Program at Munson Medical Center. He will use his previous knowledge and expertise in STEMI treatment to help refine and expand MidMichigan Health’s EMS Heart Attack Alert Program.
Dr. Lauer was drawn to the specialty of cardiology as a result of his fascination with the overall engineering and architecture of the heart. With a background in mechanical engineering, he was always amazed by the mechanics of the heart and fascinated by how it works.
He brings over 12 years of cardiology experience to his patients, offering expertise in advanced cardiac testing and treatment. As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Lauer works with patients who have cardiac-related conditions such as coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease, valvular and structural heart disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital heart defects and other complex cardiac conditions.
He values the opportunity he has to treat patients when they are acutely ill and then work with them to improve their overall health and prevent future heart attacks and strokes. “I enjoy spending time with my patients, getting to know them and helping them understand their heart condition,” said Dr. Lauer. “As a cardiologist, part of my role is to serve as a health care educator and advisor to my patients. My goal is to form lasting relationships with my patients and help them sort through all of the information so that they can make informed decisions about how they can best manage their health throughout the course of their lives.”
